Stopping sex?

My boyfriend and I frequently have sex, however, today he suddenly said he wants to stop sex until after marriage. I’m really confused by this as we’ve always been okay to have sex even though we’re not married.

I’m not sure how to feel about it, as sex is something I enjoy within our relationship. Out of shock and slight frustration, I didn’t react to his statement in the best way, and now I’m unsure of how to go about it from here. I do respect his values and beliefs, but I’m really taken aback by his comment.

Any thoughts/suggestions please.
