Anyone’s dog had pyrometra?

Hi all.
My brothers dog was diagnosed with pyometra and he’s asking to borrow 10k for her emergency surgery.
Does that sound about right as far as the price?
Maybe I’m wrong but that sounds a bit high in my opinion

i would ask for a breakdown from the vet, surely he has paperwork totaling the cost of treatment/surgery etc.

I think it sounds high.  From what I saw on google, the very high end is 5-6k.   But I don’t have a clue either!  I’d tell him about care credit.  If he doesn’t have the money, ugh, I dunno….  I can’t say for sure what I’d do.  I loaned my brother 8k once, but I don’t know if I’d do it again.  Sorry you’re in this situation.  That’s tough.

I’d offer to pay the vet directly rather than give your bro the money. This seems suspiciously high.

I wouldn’t loan my family money for their pets. 🤷🏼‍♀️ they should’ve been fully prepared for whatever expenses were coming with it. I know not all expenses are foreseen but their pets are not my financial burden or responsibility. And there is no way in hell I’d be giving away 10k for someone else’s anything.

That’s pretty high. An emergency vet quoted me at $4-5k. A regular vet shouldn’t be anywhere near that. 
My dog had pyometra and she cannot be put under (this is why she isn’t fixed so I don’t want to hear it) and surgery was expensive of course. She was very ill and the emergency vet assured me she was going to die. 
We got pain meds and antibiotics, plus treated her with a tinture we bought, vitamin c and manuka honey. 
She’s alive and well (as far as pyometra goes- she’s got some issues having nothing to do with the infection). We now pretreat her during heat with the tincture, vitamin c and manuka honey although her heat cycles are not regular now as she’s an older lady nowadays.

My dog did and I think total the vet bill was around 1200 and that included her going in after hours and staying at the vet for several days getting surgery and iv antibiotics and pain meds

Care Credit is a great option for this kind of thing. 10k is a ton of money- for a dog or for anything. He can get a no interest Care Credit card for some promotional period and work to pay it down. Maybe you could loan him like 3-5 (if you comfortably have it) to help him make a big chunk payment on it.

That is very high. They are going to spay the dog. That’s pretty much it. It’s a normal and common procedure. But, having said that, if she is at an emergency vet, that alone will cost alot. 
I had a dog that had pyometra. We called the emergency vet and her regular vet. We brought her to the regular vet, they kept her overnight and did the surgery the next morning. We picked her up later that day. I don’t remember how much it cost. But nowhere near $10,000. Probably not even $1,000 otherwise I think I would remember it more distinctly. 
Let this be a lesson to all that don’t spay their dogs. This happens to older female dogs more often than we hear about.
