How can you tell if baby is head down?

Makayla

Second pregnancy here and you’d think I’d know this by now but I’m just thrown for a loop. I’m about to be 32 weeks and when I was 30w I found out that baby boy was transverse which made sense because hiccups would be to the right of my belly, movements on the right of my belly, and pressure on the right of my belly. So once I got home I did spinning babies exercises for 2 days after and his movements were WILD, I swear we watched him turn at that point I stopped all exercises. Ever since then his hiccups are now down below my belly button(or toward my right ovary) but when I lay down I see them above and to the right of my belly button, movements I now feel down below my belly button, lots of pressure on the right side of my belly and under my ribs. I’ve tried feeling for his head but I can’t tell what’s a head and what’s a butt. I’m having uncontrollable anxiety that he’s either still transverse or fully breech.

And yes I get it “baby still has time” but hearing that does not help my anxiety, I’m just looking for what others have done to be able to assure them baby is head down!

I could only tell by ultrasound.. however my last baby kept flipping until I was 36 weeks & I swear everytime he flipped I could feel it, the movement was so much different & kind of hurt. I’m on my third & haven’t had any issues this time w him being breech, I’m 37 weeks & I always feel the hiccups near my belly button on my right side, I have never felt them down low! I think it’s because I can feel them in his back 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sometimes it’s really hard to know! I’ve never been able to tell. Both of my babies were transverse until very late in pregnancy. My first ultimately went breech and was a scheduled CS. My second was transverse until 6 days before my repeat CS and then flipped head down! So I had a VBAC. He flipped sometime between 37-38 weeks and I went into the appointment literally telling the nurse he was in the same position as before. 😂 There’s a higher chance of baby flipping later into pregnancy if you’ve had a baby before as things are a bit more “stretched out”. 🙂

I think it’s technically flipping any direction (because of the extra room), but most babies’ goal is to try to go head down!

Higher chance of them flipping as in head down? I swear these babies keep us on our toes! Lol

My 2nd i.could.feel the hiccups low and knew the bigger kicks were at the top.of my stomach. You could always ask the doc too... my babe was doing flips until 36.weeks so lots.of room.still

Sounds like baby is on the right side of your body, legs under your ribs and head in your right hip

I’m hoping so! That’s exactly how I thought he was placed. I’m allover the place with how he could be placed. Randomly I’ll feel movement on my left side but pressure on my right so it’s just weird. Hopefully good news soon!!!

I couldn't tell, and my midwives sendt me to get an extra ultrasound for it. He finally flipped over at 39 week. Could see it when he was transverse, to tummy looked oval sideways not round like normal.

I can’t tell either! When transverse my belly looked normal, it just felt different than it does now.

I have no idea. With my daughter I couldn't tell. I had an anterior placenta and all movement from her was always down low. I think it was higher up because I never once felt her in my ribs. With my son it was a lot easier. My OB checked by feeling and thought it was his butt she felt. I said no I'm pretty sure his head is down, back to my left, feet on the right. I feel him kick my ribs on the right a LOT. She pulled out the handheld to double check because she didn't believe me. Sure enough, head down, back to my left, feet on my right. This baby I'm only 14 wks so it'll be a long while before I can even guess what way baby is laying 😅

It’s so confusing sometimes 🤣 some days I’m like okay he’s FORSURE head down and other days I am beyond confused. With my daughter I’d feel her right down the middle of my tummy and so that’s why I’m confused! Lol. It’s like I can feel him pushing out all along the right side of my belly and I feel him on my right ovary it’s so weird feeling
