A child's punishment

I have a question? My husband and I disagree with this and would never punish our children this way. My sister-in-law punishes the children with push ups and they are always writing sentences. Is it ok for an 8 year old to have to write 250 sentences and I mean these sentences are super long. For example "I can not do whatever I want whenever I want and my glasses are my responsibility and I will take responsibility." It might not look long on here but on paper they are. Idk I feel like it's too much for an 8 year old. Long story short the child was running late for summer school and he forgot his glasses. So he had to write 250 sentences. It's not like a once in a while punishment it's like everyday they have to do 100 push-ups for almost everything they do wrong too. She also cusses at the children and calls them horrible names. Like stupid, dumb a$$es, and lil bitches. I feel like she is over the top and almost to the point of child abuse. Idk that's just our opinion
