Are mammograms really necessary?

I'm nervous about getting a mammogram but I know it's important for breast health. Can someone explain what a mammogram is like and why it's important?

Answer

I have a significant family history of breast cancer (4 aunts, both grandmas, and a great grandma passed away from it). My mother was diagnosed at 42 and fortunately found it extremely early, so a mastectomy was all she had to do. She is the 1st female in her family to survive it. I had my first mammogram last year at 38 and it’s not bad. They place all your breast tissue between 2 acrylic plates and take “pictures” of it. It’s a little uncomfortable, but nothing compared to what you have to face with a diagnosis. Early detection saves lives and it’s good to have a baseline for them to go off of in the future.
