What are the benefits of prenatal genetic testing?

Hey there! I've been hearing a lot about prenatal genetic testing lately. What are the advantages of these tests? Have any of you had them done? Share your thoughts and experiences!

A big benefit is that you can be prepared and your support team can be prepared if baby does have a genetic condition. Knowledge is power.

Personally we did not do carrier screening but we did do the NT and sequential screen (2 lab draws) with my first and have done the NT and NIPT with my second and this current baby. I think the biggest takeaway is that these tests are for screening and determining risk- they are not diagnostic. For us it wouldn’t have changed proceeding with pregnancy, but we felt it was important to be prepared and have support in case we had a baby with any medical issues.

We did not have this done with either of our first two, our dr did not recommended them since we didn't have a family history on either side of what they would be testing for, they're also not diagnostic so even if they come back inconclusive it doesn't mean that the baby will for sure have x y z they would need to do more testing. I totally understand knowledge is power but I am a worrier so I would be down a complete rabbit hole with any information I was given. I will say the midwife suggested I come back if I wanted it done and seem kinda annoyed when I turned it down 🥴 she tried to use the whole gender reveal thing and then I told her we weren't finding out that either 😂
