When should parents wake their infant up to nurse? Additionally, what are some indicators that the infant needs to be fed?

I was the parent to wake up my kids to feed and I'll do it with this one too. I learned the hard way that skipping a feed or delaying too long will cause clogged milk ducts and can lead to mastitis. After almost needing surgery from over a month of mastitis I will never put myself through that again. Baby wakes up, eats, and goes right back to sleep.
