IUD experiences?
After spending nearly 10yrs on the public system’s wait list and my referral being rejected from every private clinic/specialist due to being out of their “scope-of-care” and requiring “tertiary hospital treatment”, I finally had my first gynaecologist appointment. I’ve been placed as a Category 2 on the wait list for surgery (will get done within 3 months), I’ll be getting both a laparoscopy and hysteroscopy done. They suspect moderate-severe endometriosis and multiple test & imaging results have also suggested PCOS.
They’ve offered for me to get an IUD placed during the procedure but I have some significant reservations about the IUD.
1. It increases the risk of developing cysts in the ovaries, I already have too many follicles and the left ovary is 3 times the size of my right one.
2. I have a permanently retroverted uterus which increases the chance of perforating the walls.
3. I’ve heard some gnarly stories about the string causing micro tears on the partner.
4. I’ve read anecdotes of rough sex causing it to become displaced (and rough is regular for my partner and I).
I did present these concerns to the gynaecologist, but all she said in response was “the risk is low” and that she’s never seen someone have an issue with the IUD strings. I also don’t need 5yrs worth of contraception and it doesn’t stop ovulation, which is what causes a part of my pain/issues.
Does anyone have experience to share about the IUD and how it was for them? I understand this doesn’t replace medical advice from a specialist, but I would like to hear how others with similar issues have gone with it.
