We just moved out of a rental that we lived in for about two years. It was brand new, so obviously everything was nice. Through the moving process, I realized that we caused a lot of wear & tear in the house, and at the very end, we didn’t have the resources to fix everything. The walk out is tomorrow morning and I feel just sick inside … I wanted to leave the house perfect, I spent days deep detail cleaning absolutely everything, so it’s very clean, but there are some damages. I understand that we probably just won’t get our deposit back, which is actually really bad for us right now financially, but despite the money, I feel immense guilt on a moral level.

I really loved the house & appreciated the landlords kindness overall.

If you were a landlord, how would you feel if your house had some damages from a young family, but was impeccably clean? We also were only a few days late on rent like 3 times max. Would you absolutely hate us? Or would you understand that life happens & just repair & move on?

Some things that were left in not so great condition:

The walls, the paint was not durable AT ALL, every bump of toys/furniture etc caused scratches & dents. The door stops also were taken out because young kids πŸ™„ and that caused holes in the walls behind doors. We tried to fix it, but couldn’t get the paint to match so it’s uneven kinda everywhere.

Two transition areas of carpeting is frayed/missing.

Kids bedroom had those dumb sliding closet doors that came off the track & then scraped against each other from the top.

6 yr old made a deep scrape in bedroom windowsill with his β€œtools”

Pantry door had a stick-on child lock that took a good chunk of the wood veneer off when it was removed.

There are some scratches around on the floors, and the trim has a lot of dings & chips in the paint/finish.

Under a bathroom sink and under the kitchen sink there was some water damage (not caused by us, but still happened while we lived there)

Livingroom blinds were extremely fragile and several panels fell out just from opening & closing frequently.

Even just listing all of these things makes me feel so so so so so much worse. We’re really not crappy, careless people. There was just a lot of wear I guess.

Would you hate us? Can anyone relate? Any words of advice to make me feel better? Do I deserve to feel like garbage as my punishment for not doing better? I really just can’t even handle this …. 😭😭😭😭😭
