Nuchal Fold and Downs

Morgan

I am so upset. I had an anatomy scan done at 19 weeks, where my midwife told me the baby was measuring small, with an AC of less than 3%. She recommended Maternal Fetal Medicine for more scans. I asked if it was only because of size of if she believed there were other anatomy anomalies seen as well. I was assured it was because of size. Prior to me leaving this visit, she stated, they may ask you to go get testing to rule out Downs, etc. This left me feeling quite uneasy.

Fast forward to today- we go to maternal fetal

Medicine. They take an hour worth of scans. The two doctors made whispers of did she get Downs testing? Completely scared me.

The final doctor came in to read the results, asked why I got sent here, as the baby looks absolutely perfect. Her size, anatomy, all great. We leave thinking everything is wonderful… Ten minutes later I get a phone call to tell me he is so sorry but he missed the nuchal fold anomaly on the ultrasound and it is measuring larger than it should be and is an indicator for Downs. My husband and I completely lost it. He recommended going and getting blood work done and asked if I would consider termination, as we would need to know immediately in order to accommodate.

First and foremost, termination is and never has been an option in my mind. This baby is beyond loved and will be loved.
