This kid never brings a gift

I just want to know if I'm being petty. My son turns 14 next Friday and we qre having a laser tag party. I told him he could invite 10 friends and on his list is this one friend and they've been friends for 5 years. In those 5 years he's been to 4 birthday parties and never brought a gift. I was always told to never show up to a birthday party/bridal shower/baby shower/wedding etc empty handed. He has never given my son a gift. I just find it rude that his parents allow their son to come to party, eat the food, play the games, and not bring a gift. I honestly do not want to invite him because it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I just think if you're getting invited to an expensive party with fun stuff than you at least bring a gift. My ex said he never brings a gift. Our son invites him still and hang out with him. If he doesn't care about a gift it's not a big deal. I know this is so childish and honestly all I want is my child to have a good time. I just don't think this kid should keep getting invited if he won't bring a single gift
