Should an 11 year old be responsible for appying sunblock all day?

This is not about me, it’s just something I observed. A 6th grader on vacation with their family, face and shoulders absolutely burnt to a crisp on the first few days of a vacation in Mexico. Should the child have been responsible for repeated sunblock application or should the parents have stayed on top of that?

An 11 year old should absolutely not be in charge of remembering to reapply sunscreen, especially on vacation. They aren’t capable of understanding the medical consequences of not reapplying, and also shouldn’t have to remind their parents to be responsible. That’s neglect.

I think it is important to teach the child to be responsible for themselves but at this age they still need to be reminded of how to care for themselves in alot of ways. So the parents are ultimately responsible for the child in every way including making sure they are safe in the sun.

I SUPPORT my 12 year old in becoming responsible with sunscreen by reminding her to put it on, reminding her not to miss sensitive areas, spraying her back for her, and encouraging her to set a timer. Honestly, I do the same for my 15 year old.

Shit I still remind my 30+ year old husband. I think an 11 year old should definitely be independent enough to apply sunscreen themselves and know the basics of sun protection. I think everyone, regardless of age, can use a friendly reminder when out in the sun.
