Cloth diapers?

Hey mommas! 
We recently have started switching to a minimal waste lifestyle, and then I find out I’m pregnant with baby number 3! 
So, have any of you used cloth diapers? Do they work overnight once baby sleeps all night? How many would I need? Are the inserts washable too? Do they work from newborn and up? Anything you wish you knew before you started using them?

I cloth.diapered with my first and I am again for this baby. I use pocket diapers which are the ones where you use a cover with a sewn in pocket and one (or more) inserts in that pocket to adjust absorbancy. My Biggest tip befofe deciding is to have your water tested. If you have hard water you will have an awful time getting your cloth diapers all the way clean. That is why I didnt cloth diaper my second. The amount of stripping diapers, washing and rewashing was not going to be do-able, nor would it have been any savings on resources. That being said, buy as much of your stash second hand as possible and that lowers not only your upfront cost, but also environmental impact. I got my stash for my first entirely second hand, and this time its about 50/50. Pre-folds with a wool cover is the most eco-friendly option, but I dont have the patience for that, which is why I use pocket diapers. The pocket diapers I have get as small as size NB in disposable and go up to about a size 3 or 4, which for me covers my babies till potty training. They do make newborn and preemie cloth diapers, but I dont buy those since they are only used for such a short amount of time. How many diapers you need will depend on your baby's age and how often you change them. You will be changing more than most people who use diaposable do, because they dont wick and lock away moisture like disposables. I recommend having at least a 3 days supply in your stash. That way you arent washing everyday, you can go two days and then wash every third. Even if you have more than that in your stash, you really shouldnt let the dirties sit all that long. Last time I had a traditional top loading washer that I could adjust the water level on to make sure there was enough water for adequate cleaning but not so much that there wasnt adequate agitation which allowed me to save on water. I would also put the diapers through an extra spin cycle to get them about 90% dry and then either line dry outside or uae a drying rack indoors so I wasnt using a bunch of energy to dry the diapers. This also helps them last longer. This time I have a front loader and may end up purchasing a portable washer with spin dry basket to reduce my energy usage as front loaders have a bad rep of needling to be run twice to get cloth diapers clean. I used borax, washing soda and vinegar to wash ny diapers and help prevent detergent build up. As for if they work for through the night, my pocket diapers always did, I just used two of my heaviest inserts instead of only one. I dont have experience with how any other type does, but I imagine you would do similar and just double up, or add an insert into the diaper.

I don’t think they’re really considered ‘minimal waste’ if you’re using a washing machine to wash them. From my understanding if you’re going to be using them for multiple children, they are a savings financially, but the initial investment is an equivalent expense to diapers. You’re using water to wash them and flush poop. Electricity/gas to dry them. They are considered ‘crunchy’ but from what I’ve seen they are just as wasteful as disposable when you really compare.

I personally will vomit if I have to scrape or spray poop out of a diaper. I’m so sorry. I’m as crunchy of a mom as my brain and body will allow, but I just can’t do cloth diapers. Same with the fake plastic potties. I just put a child seat on our toilet instead. I can’t clean the little potty out. God bless people who choose to be CNA’s because I could NOT handle.
