Can I use this name??

Hello! My husband and I have been trying for about 6 years and are now expecting October 2025! We have had a name that we have loved and wanted to use. His cousin just had a baby last year and used the name. The name is Eleanor with a nickname of Ellie. We only see them once a year. Should I approach the cousin and ask if it is okay? The middle and last name will be different. If we can’t use that name we also like Maggie, but aren’t big fans of Margaret. Any other suggests for a formal name? If you like the nickname Maggie you could name her Magnolia
We wanted the nickname Ellie for our third, I liked the name Eleanor but my husband didn’t, so we ended up with Elliotte! Just in case you wanted another name that could be shortened to Ellie. We also considered Elise, Eliana, Eloise, and Elizabeth but ultimately wanted something more unique. 
You could still name your daughter Eleanor as the cousin doesn’t own the name! It’s your decision.

I think Maggie works as a first name on its own and is very cute. As far as your cousin, only ask her if you wont use it if she says no. If she says no and you do it anyway, that would be worse than just doing it without asking.

There is a girl I know who told me her sister is about to have a girl and she was going to name her Magnolia, and call her Maggie. I thought that was really cute!

Of course you can use the same name!!!!  If Ellie is what you want then use that.  It’s your husbands cousin, it not like it’s his brother.  I think it’s perfectly fine to use that name especially since you’ve had it picked out for so long!

Still use the name if you love it. 
With my first I had a dream that I was on the beach running around a little girl calling her Leah before I even knew it was a girl. Then my mom told me I have a cousin that named her daughter Leah too but I only see them once in a blue moon. I still named her Leah and the cousins only met twice. And they are 13, 14 years old. Now with my second her name is Alina and my other cousin named her daughter Aleena. (Same name different spelling) and we only see each other once in a couple of years.

Eleanor is not an unusual name these days, so I would still use it. Also your husband’s cousin’s daughter feels far enough removed that it wouldn’t be odd to have two in one family, especially if you only see them once a year.
