Do you think therapy is helpful?
I feel like therapy is very popular right now, almost trendy. I went to therapy in college to deal with my social anxiety and it helped a ton. It was actually group therapy. And I went to a few sessions 1-on-1 that were helpful after a breakup.
Since then (I’m 28 now) I’ve seen 2 different therapists. One was before my wedding when I thought I had cold feet (I didn’t, there were other issues which I thankfully worked through with that therapist over only 3 or 4 sessions). And the current one I’ve seen 4 times for postpartum anxiety, marriage issues (ppd was making me lash out at my husband, this therapist helped me get over my issues and things are great now).
But I tried taking to this therapist about issues I have with my mom (she abused me physically and emotionally) and her advice was to basically just accept that my mom is who she is, I can’t change her or expect her to apologize or treat me any better. That all makes sense to me, but is there a point to continue therapy now? People tell me to get therapy and deal with untreated trauma for my PTSD and childhood abuse, but I’m kind of wondering how long I’m going to need to talk about it before I can just accept it was a tough childhood and it’s time to move on. Like I’m not sure what big revelation I’m hoping to come to via more therapy. It takes a lot of time and $. Does this make any sense?
Possibly this is just not the right therapist for me? Like what does a good therapist do beyond just validating your concerns?
