i feel guilty for going to prom

it's my senior year of highschool and i was super excited to go to prom. my boyfriend had an abundance of detention hours and i had urged him since the early school year to make them up because we wanted to go to prom together. but he didnt make that much up by the time prom tickets came. i guess when i found out i was sad and he replied with "well i didn't want you to go without me anyways" and that kinda influenced me into not buying the prom ticket. my friend found out and was furious and told me to come to her prom instead, when i told my boyfriend the situation he seemed to assume that we would just go together anyways. ( me and bf had talked about the reason why i didn't end up buying a ticket beforehand )

when i told him i'd rather we go as a chill type of thing instead of a date and he got super defensive and asked if i was distancing myself and/or if this is me breaking up with him. now he just doesn't want to go at all and i feel guilty for going without him there. i just dont know what to do or how to respond
