How do payment plans work with the hospital after babies birth?

Hey, for mamas who have gone through birth. How does it work when you can’t afford to pay for the birth/ bill outright? How do payment plans work and can you decide how much you pay each month? If you have insurance do you have to pay it in a specific time?

After you get your first statement (bill), call the hospital and let them know you have questions about your bill and options. You’ll likely need to speak to a self pay biller. You can also ask if the hospital offers any discounts for payment or financial assistance. Most hospitals offer payment plans, but the structure will differ based on the facility. 
Ask to set up a payment plan, and you’ll likely be able to negotiate a monthly payment. Make sure to confirm your account will be in good standing if you pay the agreed monthly amount and NOT sent to collections. Generally, you’ll be asked to make the 1st payment immediately to show good faith.

I have a $4000 bill for my deductible and I pay $41 a month until it’s paid off. It will take a while but I’m not going to go broke paying medical bills every month. They get what they get and they’re fine with it.

Mine offered me 2 options. I could pay in less than 12 months and pay no interest, or 3 years with interest on 2 of the years. They let me tack my babies bill onto the end of mine. So it was just one bill instead of 2, but I still had to pay it in 3 years. I believe with medical as long as you’re making payments they for the most part are okay with that. My mom paid $50/ month for more than 10 years when my brother spent 4 days in ICU. It was like a $15,000 bill. She never agreed to their payment plans and her $50/month kept it out of collections. She’d pay extra whenever she could. But yeah both of my kids I had to pay off in 3 years on their payment plan. My son was $5,500 3 days of labor and a cSection, and my daughter was $4,300 an elective csection and home a day early for good behavior

Do you know about how much your coinsurance will be? They wont know your bill 100% until afterwards because things like epidural, c section etc are up in the air, but they still went over the anticipated costs with my 1st baby and we did a 12 month payment plan.
