Washing away a loved one on New Years

So my family has this superstition that if you wash laundry on New year's that you wash away a family member in the new year (i.e. a death). Personally I think its kinda silly but still kinda suspicious of whether it's true or not so I don't wash clothes on New year's and neither does anyone else in my family. My question is does anyone else's family have any superstitions/traditions on New year's? Love to know that my family isn't just crazy lol.
