Babies saliva will tell your body what and how much to produce. Also, if you supplement with formula - you’ll probably keep having trouble producing your own milk supply because baby is drinking the formula instead. If you pump - make sure your flange size is appropriate!!

If you're having a hard time have them check your baby for tongue tie! My first had it and it went unnoticed, breastfeeding was a struggle for the first couple months. 
Also, nipple shields! One bad nursing session can destroy your nipples. If it hurts beyond the initial latch, don't just power through. Ask for help, and if all else fails, go for the nipple shield. Honestly wouldn't have made it through nursing my firstborn without them.
