reference number or letter or recommendation?

my fiancé and i are moving out of state at the end of the month. he gave his job a two week notice, and today he asked his boss for a letter of recommendation for the job he’s going to be interviewing for in the new state. his boss told him to just put his number down as a reference. i feel like a letter would make a better impression? what do y’all think, is just leaving the bosses number okay or should he push for the letter?

Usually, if the new job requires a letter of recommendation, they’ll request it at time of application. Most jobs just need references.

I’ve never heard of letters of recommendation being a thing. Usually in my experience you just leave a reference person and their number on your resume and that’s enough

I’ve never had a letter, just numbers and it’s never made a difference. I’ve gotten every job I’ve applied for. It’s pretty standard to just have references listed.
