Now, as a mature adult, I would leave.
But when I was young I stayed. Because I still believed in the story of our life together, but also because I thought I was invincible and surely smart enough that I could change him. Well I wasn’t. And even if he had been changeable, I deserved better than to suffer through that process.
A lot of people say they’d never stay, but it definitely looks different from the inside. Plus many abused partners don’t have the financial means to leave. And for many, sadly, staying is safer than leaving. Leaving is when violence escalates the most and women die.
I’d definitely recommend leaving early, leaving before it gets bad, whenever possible. But I also know that there’s no point sitting in my safety and judging someone in their crisis. Things are often more complicated than we realize.
