Can i ask this after 4 dates?

So I’ve been going on dates with this guy and I’m starting to like him. A couple of our conversations make me wonder what his end goal is.

Is it bad if I ask if he’s just trying to hookup? I dont want to keep developing feelings to end up disappointed if that is what he wants. I’m not trying to ask intentions or “where is this going” I just want to know this. Is it too soon? Should I ask? (And would it be bad over text).
