Hello! I’m about to be 6 weeks postpartum and REALLY don’t want to get pregnant again any time soon. I am exclusively pumping for my newborn and am happy with my supply, 3-4 ounces. My OB said the mini pill will not affect my supply but I am really nervous. Mini pill or natural family planning ? Advice? Thoughts ?

Natural family planning doesn’t work if you don’t have regular cycles. And a lot of people don’t have regular cycles while breastfeeding.

I think the mini pill would be the best option. Postpartum would not be the time to start natural cycle tracking as birth control, there’s just too many variables with changing hormones and cycle irregularities. That being said though you still have to be careful with the mini pill. There really isn’t a big margin or error for it, if you miss one pill by three or more hours you run the risk of getting pregnant. I missed one day and now I’m 20 weeks along. I feel like many doctors really don’t give this fact the emphasis it deserves. It is the best pill option for when you’re breastfeeding (or for women who are prone to certain risks associated with traditional birth control pills like I was) but it’s not forgiving. But under perfect use conditions it is very good at preventing pregnancy.

I would trust the mini pill more than natural planning if u aren’t already experienced in that. Tried that n now im pregnant lol but everyone is different. I plan on getting the copper iud after baby is born because I don’t want hormones if I can help it. What do u think about something like that if condoms are off the table?

I took the mini pill until my cycle returned. After that i stopped and so my husband and i are doing NFP. The pill did not affect my supply at all. NFT is near impossible until your cycle returns (if you look at the NFP resources, many will say to that if you're breastfeeding, you can have sex as much as you want for the 1st 6 months under the assumption that you wont ovulate until after that. We both know its possible for your cycle to return by then so this logic is flawed)
