Is spanking a 5-6 year old abusive/traumatic?

My mom made me lay over her legs while she sat on the stairs and spanked me 4+ times in a row. Sometimes she made me pull my pants down so she got skin contact. It’s so bizarre to think about now that I have a son of my own. To hit a 5 year old is just so out of the realm of possible things I could do. Would you spank your kids at this age? Is it abuse?

Yes, its abuse. I will never understand how people justify it. Hitting another adult is considered assault, but somehow when you hit a small child, you can call it "discipline" and get away with it.

Spanking teaches kids that you hit when you don’t get what you want. That is all a kid will learn from it. Also they will develop resentment, fear, respect that is not genuine for the person giving the spanking. So, doesn’t seem to have any benefit at all.

I was spanked as a kid and I do not feel like my parents were abusive. Back then it was recommended so I don't think they liked spanking but felt like they had to in order to be good parents, which is really sad. 
Anyway, I don't spank my kids. Research is pretty clear that it is harmful. I've also never found it necessary.  
I think most parents that spank these days fall into one of two types: those that have anger issues and are abusive, OR those that don't believe it is harmful because it is so deeply culturally ingrained as a necessary part of raising "good" kids. It can take a few generations for that cultural shift to happen.

I wouldn’t say abusive to any other parent that does it but I would never spank mine. I never get the want to spank them for something wrong and I honestly feel like when people spank, it’s because that’s how they were raise and they just continue the pattern because that’s how they think it should be

No. Last time I spanked my daughter was probably around 6 or 7. Shes 9 now.
