If you had to get another family killed to save your own, would you?

My younger sister has been learning about the Holocaust in school. They finished the diary of Anne Frank. Our great grandfather is a Holocaust survivor. My sister had been talking about how mad she was that Anne Frank died and can't believe she was betrayed. Our grandpop lives with us and told us "I'll be honest. If I was in that mans situation, I would have done the exact same thing and my father would have to. You did what you did to survive. Sometimes there's wrong and right and sometimes things aren't so black and white." I don't have kids yet and honestly I feel like I would never get a whole family murdered. I would say anything else to find a different way. But maybe since I don't have a family of my own I don't know. I'm curious on if there was a situation where it was your family or someone else's, what would you do?

I feel like in that situation regardless on what you did you would be evil in someone's eyes. We can use the man from Anne Frank as an example. If he did choose them over in family in someone's eyes he would have betrayed his family. I'm gonna be honest, if it came down to it I'm picking my kids over someone else's family. Would that destroy me and eat me up inside? Yes. Would I feel guilty for the rest of my life? Probably. Would I regret it if it meant my kids got to live? No. We can all pretend that we would take the "moral high ground" but in reality most of us have never been in a situation like that and most of us would do what we had to do to keep ourselves and our family alive.

Nobody knows what they are capable of doing or what they are willing to do until they are actually in the situation. You can speculate all day long but at the end of the day, the only version of you that knows for sure is the version of you that actually did or didn't do it.

We cant assume there would be "another way." If that theoretical situation were happening, I assure you there wouldnt be another option to pick from.

We’ve never been in that position so you can’t wrap your whole mind around it.
There wouldn’t have been another way, even if you created another way the risk to your children would be greater.
In a perfect world you could save your own and another families but at that time that works didn’t exist. So it was save your own or save others
When it comes down to it, you would choose your own family and morn the others.
Yes, it’s heartbreaking. But you had to do what you had to do to survive or have a chance at survival. Hopefully that never happens again but humans are evil and greedy.

I would take your grandfathers  word for it. He literally lived through that time period and he knows what it was like.

I would do anything for my daughter. It's so sad and ugly that anyone would have to be put in that situation. It would literally eat me up inside, but I would choose to do whatever it takes for my daughter and I to survive. It's easy to say you would never do something like that… especially when you don't have children as your motivating factor. If I were not a mother, it would be so much easier for me to say that I would absolutely give my life for any child or family, but when it comes to MY child… We are surviving. No question.

I think that your parents, grandparents, spouse and children are the most important people in your life so yes if other people especially strangers have to die in orderto save them, then so be it.
