My mother-in-law clearly favours her one grandchild over the other and Christmas Eve made it very clear!

I posted the other day about how my mother-in-law had a mediocre reaction to my 10 year old nieces gift to her (a coloured picture, nice message on the back, and a handmade tree ornament she glanced at, said "Cute" and popped back in the bag). My 15 year old nephew wrote her a letter and framed it. She had a HUGE reaction to that, crying and saying it was the best gift anyone had ever given her. She hung onto that letter all night and wouldn't let it out of her sight.

Today my husband talked to her about it and said what she did was not ok. Apparently my mother-in-law thought my niece was "selfish" because she goes to the mall with her friends and spends all her money on herself and "didn't think to buy her Nanny a gift". My husband said she's 10, and newly 10 at that. My mother-in-law then told him "Well she needs to learn her lesson. I threw out that shitty picture and the ornament and made sure she saw it in the trash." My husband told her that behavior is disgusting and will tarnish her relationship, but she said "Her gift is where it belongs. Respect is earned. Treat others how you want to be treated."

This makes me so f*cking mad guys. She's a whole grown-@$$ woman and she thought this was an appropriate way to treat a 10 year old. My husband and I agreed that in future, we will stand up for our niece. Her mother is very much a doormat and doesn't like to ruffle feathers.

How the hell do people think this is ok? Even if my 10 year old niece did something like this to spite her, that reaction is not deserved. My niece and I have a great relationship but I have never, ever in a million years realized how awfully my mother-in-law treats her.
