Anyone ever taken short term disability from work for gallstones?

Question

Currently in constant pain. Chronic fatigue that may be from being up all night in pain. General feeling of just unwell. How likely would I be to get approved for short term disability leave through work short term disability insurance? I could probably take FMLA but I am not able to take unpaid leave
Edit: I do plan on having surgery to remove my gallbladder once it’s offered to me. We are in the beginning process so I know it may take some time. I’m wondering if it’s possible for short term leave until the surgery?

You'd have to just ask. Some might let you take the time, but others might say that its a fixable problem and you need to just have your gallbladder out. They're not going to want to have to pay you to be out consistently if your gallbladder becomes a chronic issue. Plus if you're in this much pain, you need to see a doctor. If your gallbladder becomes infected or ruptures, you're going to have a bad time. My diet made mine a lot worse before I ended up having an emergency removal so that's something to consider as well if you haven't already. Good luck and I hope you feel better! I know that gallbladder pain is no joke.

If the gallstones are that bad, idk why the surgery would be a process. I went into the ER with very bad pain, they found it was gallstones & I had the surgery a week later. I was able to take STD for the surgery. I’m not sure if you could take it just for gallstone pain.. it would depend on your company.

You need to ask your benefits provider what the policy is and how it goes into effect.  It can be anywhere from 1 to 14 days after you’ve been deemed ineligible to work and each carrier will require its own documentation from doctors (visits, meds, treatment plans, symptom logs, etc.) and possibly your employer (job description, what accommodations have been made, etc.)  STD also has exclusions for pre existing conditions which gall bladder has a 50/50 shot of being considered so you need to start documenting everything to lessen the chances of it being seen as you’ve left it untreated.

Honestly I think it’s very unlikely I couldn’t even get it when I had cancer.

Your doctor would need to certify that you are currently disabled for your medical problem, regardless of what the problem is. You should be given treatment options from your doctor such as surgery as the other commenter said. You can’t stay on short term disability for a chronic problem and there only a limited amount of benefits so you shouldn’t exhaust them in case you need it later after surgery for example.
