Hey there! I’m a sex educator. This is a common concern for people with vaginas, so you’re not alone! Here are some tips:
1. Don’t go straight into penetrative sex - Spend some time doing other sexual activities (oral sex, making out, external play with hands, using an external vibrator, etc.) to get you relaxed and warmed up for penetration. Your body needs time to get blood flowing to the genitals, elongate the vagina (yes, this happens during arousal!) and make the vaginal fluid (getting “wet”) to make penetration easier. 
2. Don’t be afraid to use lube - Water based lube without glycerin (Glycerin can cause yeast infections) is a GREAT addition to penetrative sex. Even if you don’t have a practical need for it, it can still make sex feel that much better. If you’re using latex condoms, be sure to only use water based lube. Do not use silicone based lube with condoms or sex toys, as it can erode the material. 
3. Practice getting used to penetration beforehand - Many sex toy companies sell dilator kits or dildos of increasing sizes that can help you get used to penetration. Bellesa Boutique has dildos of three different sizes and also sells a dilator kit from Blush with a few different sizes. Once you get comfortable with one size, move up to the next! This is completely optional, as are all of these tips, but can be very helpful! 
4. Start small - Whether you’re using dilators/dildos or not, start small! Try one finger, then two, then a small dildo, etc. until you feel comfortable with something larger. 
5. Go slow - This isn’t a race, so don’t feel the need to rush. Give your body time to relax and get used to penetration. This is something new, and it can take your body time to get used to it. 
6. Remember that a little pain during your first time having sex can be normal, but if you are uncomfortable or in more pain than you’re comfortable with, tell your partner to stop - The hymen is a small membrane covering part of the vaginal opening. For many people, it breaks from riding a bike, doing gymnastics, putting in a tampon or something else. For others, it breaks during their first time having penetrative sex. If this happens, that’s ok! You’ll likely experience some external pain and burning, and potentially some bleeding. If that happens, stop penetration and let your vaginal opening heal for a few days. Once you’re ready to try again, use lots of lube, go slow, start small, and do plenty of foreplay. However, if you are experiencing severe pain, burning, cramping, or any other symptoms that are making sex seriously uncomfortable, talk to your OB/GYN. Sex shouldn’t be painful, and they can help you figure out how to make it comfortable for you!
