Negative test but need info

So I just recently started talking to this guy and he told me today that he came in contact with herpes a few months ago and tested but it came back negative and never had an outbreak I guess I just need more info on it because I’ve never dealt with it before and really like him. And no I have not slept with him he made sure to tell me before our relationship went any farther

I know that it can live dormant up to 30 years and you can have it and have no signs and condoms are obviously not 100% protected and I know you can get a false negative as well
