I(25F) have been working at my job for 9 ish months. It’s my first job out of college (did undergrad then went straight to grad) and all is good except for this coworker (41M) that I absolutely hate. Let’s call him Sean.

Sean is a senior researcher on my team. He repeatedly makes comments that are classist, sexist, and racist (he’s a middle aged, upper class white guy). Example, he asked my coworker (28F) who is Vietnamese why she used a claw clip in her hair instead of chopsticks. Another is example is when I was on a teams call for a group meeting he made comments about my skin being too dark to be on camera. I’m black. My other coworker (31F) is Indian and he always tells her how exotic she is. We are also hiring a new team member based in Mexico and the first thing he says is “I’m glad we’re getting someone in Mexico because we can pay them less and save money”. When we were testing a product and he said not to test it with lower income people because they’d ruin the product and would just participate in testing to make a quick buck. The product is for public transportation…

He’s also hella patronizing and bad at his job. He gave me the wrong data set and when I complained about it he made it seem like it was my fault and he was doing me a favor because I’m a junior designer so I should make sure to double check what he sends me. And told me it was a good learning experience. The data was for a project he was onboarding me to. Imagine getting a new job and they tell you all the wrong info, give you the wrong materials and then tell you it’s your fault because you should’ve magically known.

Me and other people on our team have brought this to our manager. We’ve told him on multiple occasions that Sean makes offensive and inappropriate comments and is bad at his job. We’ve had to redo his work dozens of times, despite him making way more than us.

My boss’s response: Sean is on the spectrum so he doesn’t know that what he’s saying/doing is not okay.

Oh, he also made a comment about how he thought black people didn’t shower everyday? Like out of the blue.

Anyways. End of rant.
