Do you get cold sores?
If you are prone to cold sores, do you tell new partners before you kiss or do anything sexual? Or is it so common that there’s no point in disclosing? Cold sores (HSV-1) seem like such a common thing these days (up to 80% of people have it, but not everyone gets breakouts) that I’m not sure what to do. I’ve been thinking about it recently after a breakout and I’m concerned that it’s a moral dilemma not to tell people. I always thought that it was only contagious when you have a cold sore, but I recently learned you actually can transmit it even when you don’t see it on your face. My first boyfriend in high school never told me he got them, and now I deal with them once every few years. My doctor kind of blew it off as something insignificant years ago when I first got a cold sore at 17, so I never thought it to be a big deal until now. What is the norm? Is this something you’re supposed to disclose? I feel like my doctors did me a huge disservice by not fully educating me, and I also am concerned that I may have unknowingly passed on my cold sores to all the people I’ve kissed since age 17.
