HSV-2 (Genital Herpes) and Sex

I've been diagnosed earlier this year with HSV-2 (Genital Herpes) and I am still new to learning everything about this condition. So far, I've heard that its a little different for everyone and that some are lucky to eventually go years without an outbreak. I unfortunately don't have a primary doctor yet to see, currently struggling with insurance right now. Is it true that I can take medication to help lower the risk to spread the virus to my partner? What other steps can I take to try to lower the risk?
