Loving Yourself First? What?

Question

I never really understood when people would say "You have to love yourself first before you love someone in a relationship." I'm going through a really bad heart break ? & one of my friends said this to me. I don't fully understand what she meant ?I mean it's hard... Any clarifications?

I went through the same exact thing! You need to be content, being an individual person...meaning a single girl! Go out have a good time and start loving life, and of course yourself. Love what you see in the mirror every day when you wake up, love how you're treating others around you, love the things and ideas that are most important to you, love the kind of WOMAN that you are! They call it heart break for a reason! It isn't easy but it sounds like you've got some great friends that are giving you some amazing advice!

Know what you are worth and respect that. When you can respect yourself; when you look in the mirror and like what you see; when you know your flaws and consider it beauty; and when you forgive yourself of mistakes: then those are things that point to you loving yourself. (Or just examples). 
When those sort of things (love for yourself) is in the picture then it can help your relationship.

It is hard to care for another person if you cannot care for yourself yet. In other words, always put yourself first. You don't want to rely on others for your happiness. Always make yourself happy before anyone else.
