If you’ve tried marriage/couples counseling, did it work to save the relationship?

Curious to know if it’s actually helpful or just extending the inevitable?

I did marriage counseling and individual counseling during my first marriage, it absolutely helped. It helped me see my worth, see my abuse for what it was, and have the strength to leave. Counseling isn’t there to ‘save’ your relationship. It’s there to help you navigate it to the place it’s meant to be, and sometimes that’s divorce court.

We had a hooooorrrrible marriage counselor, and that definitely did more harm than good. Each of us going to therapy individually is actually what saved us.

Yes, it helped me and my husband. I think everyone (individual and couples) should try therapy. The only time I think married couples shouldn’t try therapy is in the case of something major like domestic violence. But other than that, why wouldn’t you do everything you can to save your marriage, even if it means going to therapy? Even if you’re set on divorcing, it can teach the couple how to separate and co-parent amicably.
