Do I have to tip when i pick up food?

Question

I went to a restaurant to pick up food doing ‘curbside pick up’. I paid online and didn’t tip and when I got to the restaurant they brought the food out to my car. However, she asked me to sign my receipt. Even though I had already paid online and put 0 tip. Well, because of the pressure of her hovering over me and watching me sign, I gave a $5 tip 😭 it was 2 items and it cost $35 dollars. Would it have been rude to just put $0 for tip?

I don’t tip on pick up orders just like I don’t tip when I go thru the drive thru at Wendy’s or McDonald’s. Only when I dine in and someone is constantly servicing me

They did a service for your convenience. An employee hired specifically for this job, packed your order correctly and brought it out to your car. You tip for that. 
I worked at Carrabba’s in carside. It was the busiest carside in all the Carrabba’s restaurants. I was paid $2.13/hr as they expected me to make enough in tips to hit minimum wage. It was a lot of work. There was a ton that went into making sure your order was received correctly, taking phone orders, packed correctly, all cheese and utensils added, bread was warm, bread dip added, that the food stays warm while you drive over, and getting payments. This sometimes was done while waiting tables too to help out the busy dining room. Getting the kitchen to give everything on the ticket isn’t always the easiest thing. On top of all this too, include the times we are dealing with an unhappy customer and they are yelling in our face rather than asking for a manager. That can be overwhelming and degrading. It really sucked when we didn’t get a tip (typically split the tip between 3-4 people) and were treated like we didn’t do anything to make their order. 
So yes, I tip in most all situations dealing with food services. My baristas get tips. My pick up order gets tips. My sit down restaurants of course do too.

I don’t always tip. I tip based on service when I eat out. If I’m getting something from a restaurant as a Togo order I treat it the same as if it was Taco Bell (no one’s tipping Taco Bell workers or McDonald workers). This is coming from someone who does make tips as well.

I always tip. Minimum 20% if I’m sitting. 15% on to-go. And 10% if it’s a counter order and they’re just turning and grabbing like bagels at Panera or at a donut shop/bakery.

I typically only tip at sit down restaurants if the service is good or small non-chain restaurants in my town.

I don’t mind tipping for services rendered to me at sit down restaurants voluntarily. I dislike being told what I’m required to give as a tip and even seen places where your tip is automatically calculated in your purchase. Yet, it feels as if you’re still supposed to tip your waiter/waitress.
One doesn’t know the person being serviced pocket and possibly what sacrifice was made to actually step into that particular established restaurant and dine on maybe what they consider an expensive dish which can only be done once every 6-18 months. Therefore, let me tip of my own free will. 
I don’t tip when I go thru drive-thru, or the pick-up service. For delivery, it depends on if I have enough funds available after my initial purchase. I had one driver when I ordered pizza for my family literally looked at me with expectancy for a tip when I know you provide the tip online during your order. When I feigned stupidity to see if he was really that bold, he was like: “ no tip!?” They don’t even come to your door with your order: you have to meet them outside & wait for the driver to take out the car.

Personally this is just me, but I think of it as; if you worked there and rarley got tips how would you feel? Not saying they don’t get tips but working in customer service/ restaurants, and such not getting tips kinda sucks lol. Also the tips you do see at places the WHOLE staff that shift has to split the tips. Idk that’s just me, I always tip even if I buy a $2 drink.

I almost always tip and I don’t go by the percentages because it’s skewed that way. The tip is usually lower for take out orders though.
