Please please please install your baby gates properly! My nephew is fighting for his life after falling down stairs

My in-laws refused to install their baby gate properly. They had a huge 15 inch gap between the gate and the floor so their husky could get under the gate. They also installed it so that it swung out over the stairs.

I told them many times that this is unsafe for the dog and children. They refused to believe me. I showed them how easily the gate can unlatch and a child could fall down the stairs. They refused to change anything.

My kids are older but I have a 14 month old nephew. They're not quite sure exactly what happened, but either way the gate wasn't latched and one second he was upstairs and the next he was unconscious at the bottom of the stairs on the tile.

He has multiple skull fractures and is bruised so much. He has been having seizures daily. He's on a breathing tube. He's in the pediatric ICU and they don't know if or when he will wake up. The police have already been to my in-laws house and took photos of everything. They told my in-laws that the baby gate should NEVER have been installed like it was.

This is a huge family event and we're all dealing with it differently. I wish I had spoken up and made them change it before this happened.

Edit Feb 19: things are not looking good. He's having a hard time and seizures are happening more and more. He coded this morning and the doctor asked them how far they want to go because his little body is fighting and things have gotten worse. They're talking about a tube in her neck to help him breathe because the tube he has through his mouth isn't helping enough or something.

Edit Feb 21: My nephew is stable but not good. He's been revived twice more and we're told he will probably not wake up.

In terms of our family, everyone is arguing and fighting. My husband and I have been accused of not speaking up because of the gate. My in-laws say that parents need to watch their children. My brother-in-law blames me for it because I told them it was dangerous but didn't make them change it. It's an awful mess.
