Rough GP visit set off my medical anxiety

Jade • Jade

Ive never been good with medical care after some childood trauma. In 2023 I had a very difficult hospital stay which only exasperated the issue. I thought I would be able to handle the fear with my pregnancy (first time mum at 5w5d). I went to the gp today to get bloods done to check if im anemic with the pregnancy. The nurse was awful. I always start bloods appointments by saying im needle phobic, quicker you work the better i am and i do have a history of passing out, but not for years. My first arm was unsuccessful after quite a bit of poking around in there. Id done well to stay really calm and asked her to try the other arm and see if there was an obvious spot to take it from, which there was fortunately. After taking the bloods i felt my blood pressure dropping, so i asked for cold water as this can sometimes reduce the spacey feeling. She proceded to grumble something to me about how i should have used the bed and proceded to type up notes. All i could do was shift down in the chair and try and lock my feet in place because i knew i was going. I passed out, hard. I felt so so ill (ive also been dealing with morning sickness and bad vertigo from withdrawl from the antidepressants which im sure made the passing out feel so much worse) and felt completely alone. I came back around as she slammed the door back open, wedging it open. She shoved a cup of water in my hand and as soon as i managed to lift my head again, she practically dragged me out of the door and told me to just go sit outside. Did not check on me, even though i sat there for another 10-15 minutes feeling like hell. Ive no idea if she got enough blood. Ive no idea if im meant to call in a few days or what? Im now terrified that if i cant even handle a simple blood draw at this point, how the hell am i going to manaage a full pregnancy and birth? Nhs, UK
