Tiptoeing around asking him if he’s looking for a job

My bf got laid off in January. I think he’s applied to some jobs but most of the days he’s just sleeping and play video games. I genuinely never see him motivated to find something. Every time I try to bring the topic up, he gets extremely sensitive. I understand the job market is bad right now, but I feel like not really trying is his downfall. I don’t think he wants to work tbh. And this is worrisome for me bc our apartment is also always so messy. He does some chores but I’m the main one who cleans, cooks, and I work my full time job. How can I ask him without him getting mad at me? Or is this a normal time frame to take a break.
