Why or why not? My husband is going to give his daughter his old cell phone when he upgrades. He currently has an iPhone 5. I say she's too young but he says its so she can call him in case of emergencies and so she can call her mom etc... I suggested getting her a pay as you go phone if that's the case. I feel she is way too young. Thoughts?

Nope. There's no need for all that. Get her a cheap phone that you load minutes on to.

It depends on the kid. Only that kid's parent knows how responsible they are and what they need and don't need. I have an 11 year old niece who has a laptop and a galaxy android. She's always been very mature for her age. She remembers numbers off the back of her head even though she has them saved. She teaches her little sister who's 8 and doesn't yet have a phone the numbers so if she's not around she can call who she needs to in case of emergencies. Not all kids are completely irresponsible. I got my first phone at about 10-11 and have never lost one.

I don't see why not, 1 it's a hammy down, 2 you can lock everything out including data and it will work just like a plain phone and 3 you can track them with gps. Same with my son he is gonna get one of our older iPhones because then we don't have to buy a new phone and if he loses it, its not gonna cost us a new phone. Old smartphones don't resell for much anyways.

My kids will get a smart phone around that age. My kids will be involved in activities after school I don't want them to constantly rely on someone else to be able to reach me. With an iPhone I have control over it, I can block certain features and I can track it. I think people who say that their kids can't have a cell phone until they can pay for it themselves are ridiculous and unrealistic. But hey, not my kid not my problem.

I don't think a child should have any phone until they have a job and can pay for it themselves. If she needs to call her mom, she can use your phone or her father's (or house phone if you have one). If she's at someone else's house, she can their phone.

I wouldn't mind my son having a smart phone at ten for the same reason he has a track phone now at five. A smart phone would be capable of giving me a exact location on him (or at least the phone) if SHTF, which the current doesn't. I'm paranoid, what can I say? It doesn't have to be a unlocked phone, it just needs text/phone/gps. I don't mind him having something like that.

This is a really nifty feature that you passcode and you can restrict it down to a basic phone. Also if you do family plan for iTunes they can't buy apps until you agree. My sons iPad has only apps I installed and that's all he can do on it.

I feel since you already have the phone why not. She's old enough to where she may be times where she needs to get ahold of her mom and dad or other family member. I think you should just get the calling feature, or calling and texting. No need for Internet. At that age any internet use should be monitored by a parent

I voted yes, meant to vote no. I don't think children need phones. Maybe I'm just old school, but I don't see the reason for it. Unless they are 16 and driving, they don't need a phone.
