Vegetarian?

I live in the southern part of Mississippi and have been considering becoming a vegetarian and possibly later on a vegan. I'm worried about what people will think around me. I grew up on a farm so I've witnessed chickens, pigs, and cows being killed and it always made me sad but everyone in my family eats meat. I honestly do not know one vegetarian and I feel like no one would be supportive. Any opinions or advice?
