How much to spend on 1st b-day gift?

We were invited to a 1st birthday party for our friends' son. We've seen them probably 4 or 5 times since he was born. How much should we spend on a gift? I feel like they're normally pretty generous with us (always send my hubby and me birthday cards) although we don't have kids yet to know what they would spend for a kid's birthday. What do you normally spend for a friend's child?

My family always writes a check in one parent's name for birthdays under 4. That way they can get the child clothes, diapers, a toy or a small necessity. One of my cousins actually requested checks for his son's 1st and 2nd birthdays, the money being put into a savings account towards his future.

I usually ask if there's anything specific he wants and buy that, if not I think $25 is good :-)

My husband and I as standard practice spend $20-30 on birthday and Christmas gifts, unless it's very close family or friends. Around $20 is probably plenty :)

More than likely that 1 year old will play with the wrapping paper and the box....seriously. 20-25 tops

My husband and I normally  get a bunch of cheap toys and put it in a gift bag...kids always want "a lot" and no ones feeling will be hurt if they brake or get lost ext. And soon they kid will move on to other things anyways why buy something for big bucks when u won't see the kid play with it anyways
