Marrying SO's family??

Question

Do you believe in the saying, "You didn't just marry me, you married my family"? I just read an article about this marriage counselor giving advice to young adults about the importance of choosing wisely who you're going to marry, because you'll be marrying his/her family as well. I've heard the phrase "marrying into his family" but never marrying his family. Which one do you agree with the most? Or do they mean the same?

When I marry my SO if it means I'm also marrying his family then I'm doomed, never met such a bunch of stuck up, empathyless, cold hearted people in my life.  So pleased their son hasn't turned out like any of his parents or his sister! I don't have nothing to do with any of them, I need nice people and down to earth, grounded people in my life.

If that was true I would have thought twice about marrying my husband! He is amazing.. His family is the only downside - so negative and abrupt..

I feel when you marry your SO you're now also marrying into his family. If he doesn't speak to them at all, thats one thing... Otherwise, they're your family now.

That depends on how your SO feels about it.

I did marry my husband's family as well. I know that, within reason, he has my back. But I also know that I have to make every effort to get along with them and at least tolerate them. Because he loves and respects his family.

He, on the other hand, only married part of mine. My grandmother, stepmom, and siblings. And I offer him the same assurance. I have his back but he MUST play nice.

With the exception of a few minor hiccups, it's always worked for us.

I think it depends on your definition of family values. If your SO is close with their family and you end up having children...you are definitely marrying the family.

It depends on your SO's relationship with his family. Me and my hubs are both very close to our respective family. His family is like the mafia.  We see our family every weekend and do a lot together... So yea, I married his family.  And getting along with family is important to me, so it was something I was aware of and looking out for when we became serious in our relationship. Now, if neither of us lived close to family or hardly spent time with them, it wouldn't be as big of a deal. :)

Sooo umm can i marry one side but not the other? Lmao don't get me wrong i love my SOs family i truely do but i prefer his moms side over his dads side. Sounds horrible but i rarely even want to go to his dads house.
