Homeless people... Little vent
I try to be a Good Samaritan... But it's getting a little ridiculous in my town. We have a very hippy vibe, so a lot of people here are homeless "to be free of responsibility and one with nature"...
.
But there was this guy (obviously homeless or a cross country backpacker) in a fast food place where my husband works (subway) who asked for a couple of dollars. He had some money in his hand and I figured he was short a couple dollars for a sandwich) I told him I had no cash money (and had my hands full with the toddler I nanny and diaper bag, etc. And before I could even put my bags down he begged me to reconsider and that he only needed $2 (making me feel sure that he indeed only wanted a sandwich and was short) but I honestly had 0 cash on me, so I offered for him to get in line with me and I'd pay for his sandwich.
.
After he saw that I wouldn't give him cash he got really mad and cussed me out (in front of a toddler) and told me that I'm terribly selfish and just like the rest of consumerist America. Like, what?? I just offered to buy him a sandwich and he's mad at me? And I'm SELFISH? It got pretty bad and my husband was on shift and kicked him out for his behavior and the fact that soliciting isn't allowed. I've been homeless before (my mom, sister, and I bounced around domestic abuse shelters, homeless shelters, friends houses, etc. for 2 years in my early high school years, having no money for food and my mom not getting food stamps for the fear that our homelessness would put us in foster care (ended up there anyway)). But I don't understand the sense of entitlement that the homeless people in my community have.
.
Sorry for the vent it just made me mad
