I was wondering that too!! I have seen people saying that you should exfoliate your belly to prevent stretch marks, but have also seen people say not to scratch because it can cause stretch marks. Exfoliating and scratching seem like the same thing to me! Haha so I have no idea

With my first child, I made it to 8 months with no stretch marks.  I moisturized daily etc. During my eighth month I began to itch on my lower belly and I scratched and the stretch marks spread over my entire belly over the course of that month. I don't know if the scratching necessarily attributed to the stretch marks but they coincided.

The itching is caused by stretching, and the stretching causes the stretch marks. Scratching an itch cannot cause stretch marks. If that were the case, you could develop stretch marks from an itchy rash, or a bug bite.

Lotion helps the itch, a lot of people swear by coco butter lotions. Stretch marks are caused by the rapid growth or stretching and some women don't even get them in pregnancy

Thinning of skin can contribute,I think. So scratching just might not be a great idea :(  My 1st pregnancy I would be at the beach every other day, and put oil on my belly. I got very few SM. and I had gained almost 70 lbs! I was ALL stomach( started at 103lbs- ended at 167.😳 I attribute it to the oil;) 😘

Stretch marks happen UNDER the skin not on the surface , that's why no amount of lotion or oil can prevent them, and they are not caused by scratching
