Should I go on birth control?

I've had my period since I was 10 and my cramps were bad since then. My cramps are so unbearable that I can't move or do absolutely anything when I have my period. When I go to school, I have to be in the nurses office throughout the whole day because I feel as if I'm going to faint and I feel so lightheaded. My mom knows how bad they get and I turn 16 in a couple months so we were talking about going to the obgyn to see what they would recommend. Have any of you ladies experienced something like this and birth control helped or did not help? Anything would be much appreciated, thank you!!!
