What would you do if someone had a seizure and you were in the same room with them and it's just the two of you?

Put something under their head to protect it and make sure things are cleared out of the way. Try to turn them on their side in case they throw up so they don't choke. Time the seizure. Stay with them until they wake up and explain what happened. If it's the first time they've had a seizure or if it's longer than normal, call 911. 
Never hold them down or try to put something in their mouth.

My mum took a first aid course with a charity at my age and she told me you have to lay them down and protect their head whilst clearing all furniture Etc out of the way to stop them from hurting themselves

*sigh* as someone that has seizures, I always find it best if I give the person I'm with a heads up and a crash course on what to do.
First off, roll the person onto their side and make sure their neck is supported. Check to see if they're breathing and check their pulse. Make sure that nothing is in their airway. As soon as they are deemed safe, start timing it. This could be important, depending on their case, and it's always good to have information on how long they had been out.
Stay away from their hands! Do NOT let them grab you and do NOT attempt to hold their hand. They are not in control of their muscles, and if they seize up, They can cause harm to you. I've broken someone's hand before because of this.
Check their phone, if you can. Most of us have information that you can access without unlocking our phone with further instructions, including who to call.
If they have an ICE (in case of emergency) contact, call them and inform them on what is happening.
If you cannot contact anyone, They do not have information on what to do on them, they do NOT have a history of seizures or if you are unaware of any medical history for them, call 911. The paramedics will talk you through what to do until they get there.
Keep calm. Talk to them in a calm, relaxed voice. If they come out of the seizure before help arrives, inform them of who you are, what happened, how long the seizure had lasted, and who you had called. Keep them sitting, and begin asking them questions such as their name, the last thing they remember, if anything hurts or feels damaged, etc. Keep them talking. If they slip back into a seizure, once again make sure that they are laying on their side and breathing, and begin timing it again. Keep talking to them.

I'm trained to help people through seizures but there isn't an choice for that. If it's someone who is an adult, you should ask before calling 911. Otherwise just keep them as clear of objects as possible.

I have seizures I have had them since I was in the third grade now I'm twenty so I know a lot about what to do because my mom has told me but I've never seen anyone have one
