Thalassemia minor ???

Question

Has anyone been told they are a carrier for thalassemia minor? If so how did you react to it? Do you know other people with it ? 
I was just told I am a carrier and it's a genetic blood disorder that causes a little anemia I am waiting on my husbands test results to see if he is a carrier as well. Has anyone experienced this ?

Yes, I have thalassemia minor. My mother is a carrier as well. My first son is 9 and he does not carry the trait. I am now 16w3d with my second baby and have been feeling terrible. Extremely fatigued, lots of headaches, shortness of breath. My midwife just called today with my hemoglobin levels. They are down to 98. She has referred me to an OB, as I can not take iron supplements and will need a special treatment plan. She said transfusion levels would be around 70, so I'm still okay. My levels before this pregnancy hovered around 108 so I'm definitely dropping some. Intake as much iron as you can from your diet. Spinach is great! There are many other foods that will help. I don't know much about it, but my husband has it - genetic from his mother's Greek background.  Told my doctor at the first appt, & he didn't seem concerned at all since I wasn't a carrier.  If your husband isn't a carrier, it shouldn't cause any serious problems. Your child may have it, though, just as my husband does from his mother.
