Merconium testing at birth??

Question

Does anyone who has given birth or work in maternity in California know if they drug test all babies merconium at birth? If they absolutely have to, urine or blood testing is fine but I am 100% against any unnessisary testing, vaccinations or procedures that are not medically nessisary.

The hospital i worked at only tests if the mother is on Medicaid. Its policy that you cannot refuse, as its in the guidelines for receiving welfare insurance. But privet insurance they only test if the doctor has concerns that the mother was abusing drugs while pregnant.

It depends on several factors such as if you are on state assistance, if the doctor suspects something based on you or baby's behavior, or if you tested positive during your pregnancy. It's a non-invasive procedure since they just collect the sample after baby passes it, and usually it something that can be done without moms permission since its for the welfare of the child.

In MI. In my hospital we only test mec and urine if there is concern for illicit substance use  (e.g., mom admitted to using during pregnancy or baby is born displaying signs of use/withdrawal).
