No, if your purpose is to shame then you are not teaching your child anything. You are just humiliating them. If my child was to steal something then yes I would make him/her return it. But the sandwich board idea serves absolutely not purpose other than shaming. I think a good parent can find other ways of teaching their children

Holding up a sandwich board isn't the only form of shaming. I put no, because I don't anticipate ever shaming my child as a form of discipline, but honestly, I can't anticipate every scenario we will ever encounter. I don't think I'll ever have my child hold up a sandwich sign the way you described, but I might use another form of shaming as a punishment if it seems appropriate. For example, my brother wouldn't clean his room as a teenager, so my mom told him that everything she finds on his bedroom floor that doesn't belong there, will be displayed for the neighbors to see. He didn't believe her, and came home from school to find his undies flapping in the wind in our front yard. Needless to say, his room was clean from then on.

There is no way that shaming can be an effective form of punishment. It will never "fit the crime"... To me, it makes no sense. Yeah, let's embarrass a kid because that will show him not to pull a kids hair; make him hold up a sign in public to be ridiculed by strangers, that'll really be productive 😒
It's your job as a parent to teach and discipline in a constructive way, not in a way that damages your child psychologically or emotionally. Also, it's something that belongs in the home, in an intimate setting, not amongst strangers whose opinion should hold no weight in water when it comes to your family's doings. Why subject your child to public shaming??? Ultimately what you're telling your child is that  stranger's opinions' of them count and it's OK for them to ridicule your child. Not very smart or effective parenting if you ask me.

No, this is medieval. The only way I could see it is if their "crime" involved publicly shaming someone else, then the punishment should be a public apology (ex. Online bullying)

Depends. Maybe not like this but I think kids being a little ashamed when the behave badly is okay. When I was little and I did something bad, knowing that my mom was disappointed in me or embarrassed by something I did was what made me not do it again. I felt embarrassed bad ashamed too! Time outs or getting sent to my room did nothing.

I think there is a time and a place. If someone stole, yeah I think they should have to wear the sandwich sign. If someone lied, yup! But if it's embarrassing and related to sex or their own body in some way, then no. I also think shaming should be a last resort.
