Curious about your thoughts on Scarlet Johansson starring in the movie adaptation of the manga Ghost in the Shell. Some are saying it's white washing and taking away an opportunity to showcase an Asian actress, others are saying it's the only way to fill seats with that movie. What do you think?

I don't see how its whitewashing honestly.

Yes, anime and manga are Japanese/Asian of origin, but anime characters are usually western looking as it is, so.

I've never seen anime or manga with characters who have Asian features.

Also, it's a bloody cartoon. Does it really matter? Not really.

I think it does remove a good chance for an asain actress to get her foot in the door, but I also think that the anime/manga crowd is smaller than regular action people, and that in order to make enough money the producers are going to try to pull in more than just the anime/manga crowd by using an already known actress.

Box office success is almost always used as a convenient excuse to whitewash a film, whether it's based on manga/anime or not.

It's to make it accessible and familiar to Western audiences. Trust me, not a lot of people would have even known about it had ScarJo not been casted, including me. Unfortunate? Absolutely. But it's not to purposefully white wash.
